    It was a little unclear at first after coming through passport control in the arrival hall, but found the rental place very quickly, bus service ok. Service was excellent, very friendly person, taking the time to explain the contract. I knew about the full tank of petrol, which I don't like, but have to accept. Also the insurance was explained. The car hire was very cheap so I wasn't expecting too much, the car had a few marks on it, but was in perfect working order. Tires could do with a renewal soon. The car was clean, radio working,so all in all I was happy.

San Francisco International Airport is located overlooking the bay just south of the city centre and within the town of Millbrae. It is connected to the main roads around the city and neighbouring towns and cities, and provides easy access to San Francisco, Oakland, the Pacific Coast Highway, and also the main inland areas of Silicon Valley and the Californian Winelands. As the most popular entry point into Northern California, and a major connection point for Asia and the Pacific, San Francisco is served by most major airlines, and direct flights are available to most American and European Cities along with Japan and Australia.

San Francisco Airport Car Hire Advice

Northern California and the area around San Francisco is the centre of some of the best self drive routes in the world, and visitors to the area have plenty of choice about where to tour. Popular routes include the Pacific Coast Highway, which you can either follow north to Seattle and the Rocky Mountains, or south to Los Angeles and San Diego via Big Sur and Santa Monica. Other options include the inland wine making areas such as the Napa Valley, which are beautiful in early autumn and summer.

All of the car hire companies at San Francisco Airport are located in a single building called the Rental Car Centre, which is accessed via the airport train service and shuttle busses. The desks are all found on the fourth floor of the building and you can choose from Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National and Thrifty.

Driving Directions to San Francisco Airport

If you are travelling to the airport from the city centre of San Francisco, then you should initially head south along the Embarcedero Freeway which leads from the city centre to meet the John Lick Freeway at Portola Place. From here, continue south along the freeway past Orange Park, then join the Bayshore Freeway which has exits to the terminal buildings. If you are coming to the airport from San Jose, then you would head northwest along the Bayshore Freeway which goes straight through the city limits and onwards to the airport.
