    It was a little unclear at first after coming through passport control in the arrival hall, but found the rental place very quickly, bus service ok. Service was excellent, very friendly person, taking the time to explain the contract. I knew about the full tank of petrol, which I don't like, but have to accept. Also the insurance was explained. The car hire was very cheap so I wasn't expecting too much, the car had a few marks on it, but was in perfect working order. Tires could do with a renewal soon. The car was clean, radio working,so all in all I was happy.

A Quick Guide to... Cherbourg

Cherbourg is based in Normandy in north western France. It has been known as Cherbourg but in 2000 it was renamed Cherbourg-Octeville as the two places joined together. It has been an important base for the French Navy and at one time there was a thriving glass industry in the area but that was destroyed many years ago.

History of Cherbourg-Octeville

Cherbourg was the first area taken by the Vikings and the port was born once the Contentin Peninsula was invaded. Britain occupied it during the Seven Years War and they destroyed the Military buildings before they left. Under Napoleon the harbor was strengthened and this was a long term job as it took from 1784 until 1850. It has a place in history as the first place the Titanic visited having left Southampton on its fatal voyage. During WWII there was the Battle of Cherbourg after the Normandy invasion and the City was captured in 1944.

Places to See in Cherbourg

There is a race track for those who are interested in horse racing and for people who are interested in science the Cite de la Mer is a museum that catalogues the historical side of the city?s maritime history? and this is a long history. The Mus?e des beaux-arts Thomas Henry has over 300 paintings and began with the works of a local painter Thomas Henry although there are many other artist?s work shown there today.
