The service is good and quick. They had no diesel cars left, but we could choose from several gasoline cars. The only minus - too many scratches on all doors, roof ...

It was a little unclear at first after coming through passport control in the arrival hall, but found the rental place very quickly, bus service ok. Service was excellent, very friendly person, taking the time to explain the contract. I knew about the full tank of petrol, which I don't like, but have to accept. Also the insurance was explained. The car hire was very cheap so I wasn't expecting too much, the car had a few marks on it, but was in perfect working order. Tires could do with a renewal soon. The car was clean, radio working,so all in all I was happy.

A Quick Guide to... Calvi

Calvi is situated on the island of Corsica and is the largest tourist area there. There is evidence to suggest that the area was inhabited as far back as the Neolithic period and from 1000 BC there is proof of a Roman influence and there have been many invasions since. Formerly part of the Genoese empire there is a statue to Christopher Columbus and many people believed that this is where he was born. Corsica became independent in 1768 and many British people may have heard of Calvi as the place where Admiral Nelson lost his eye.

The best way to get to Calvi is to fly into Bastia as there are not many flights that fly into Calvi itself. The bus to Calvi can be quite expensive so hiring a car is one of the best options. If you do fly into Calvi there are a number of companies that will allow you to hire a car while you are there including Locations Auto-Moto on the Marina. There is no need to hire a car to get around Calvi due to its size but there are plenty of places nearby worthy of a visit. To avoid not getting the vehicle you want there is the option to prearrange a car hire before you travel by going to www.anycarhire.com and booking before you begin your holiday. To see as much of the area as possible car hire in Calvi is recommended.

There are a few things to remember when driving around the island and the main one is that the roads off the beaten track will not be perfect. There is also the need to take a map as road signs are only in Corsican and the high mountains have narrow lanes and no safety rails.

Sightseeing in Calvi

For families and children, there is a large beach in Calvi and the Oceanographique which is a sea life centre. For history lovers there is a 13th Century church with a special statue of Jesus that many believe is the reason that Calvi was not successfully invaded by the Saracens. A museum that displays an insight in to Corsican history is the Musee de las Corse, and this is a must see site when in Calvi.
