Costa Rica Car Driving Information

Driving has become easier over the past few years in Costa Rica but the road is still subject to some patholes, animals, pedestrians, horses and bicycles and has no line marking. A lot of highways have been fixed in the last few years but you never know where new craters are going to pop up. Traffic in Costa Rica travels on the left hand side and overtaking is on the right hand side.

Fuel stations are available speed limits in the urban and city areas is 35 mph to 60 kph, on the express highways it is 50 mph to 80 kph and in the downtown areas it is 25 mph to 40 kph and the traffic police use radar to enforce speed limits, so it is advisable to check your speed or else you will be every 10 to 15 miles and are opened from 8 am to 8 pm and some of the stations on the express highways are opened 24 hours.

The minimum age for driving is 18 years and a valid home country driving licence is required and in some instance international driving permit is required. It is very essential to carry your driving licence, registration papers, Insurance certificates and proof of ownership along with your passport while driving. Seat belts are compulsory in Costa Rica both in the front and in the rear seat and childrens below the age of 12 must sit in the rear seat with seat belt fastened. Driving in the night is not recommended as it is dangerous because of the high percentage of other drivers who have been drunk, do not leave anything in the car it will be probably be stolen, it is advisable to stay off during windy and wet weather as it is very dangerous if possible stop and wait for the weather to settle down. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 milligrams of every one liter of blood and if any one found more than the prescribed limit this will result in a crime and would be severe and penalised heavily and or licence may be barred.
