Zaragoza

Zaragoza is a large city in north-east Spain. It’s the capital city of the Zaragoza Province and of the autonomous region of Aragon. It’s the 5th largest city in the country, in terms of population and was first founded by a tribe of ancient Iberians between 12 and 25 BC. It’s situated on the Ebro river and in a valley with a variety of ecosystems, ranging from deserts to a mountainous region.

The sights in Zaragoza are plentiful, with there always being lots to do. One of the main features of the city is the Basilica-Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar. This is a Roman Catholic church and is reputed to be the first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in history. The architecture is of Baroque style and the building was built in stages throughout the 17th and 18th century.

Elsewhere in the city you can find La Seo Cathedral and the Aljaferia Palace, the latter of which is a fortified medieval Islamic palace built during the 11th century. Both of these plus other buildings form the Mudejar Architecture of Aragon, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In recent years Zaragoza has built itself a reputation as one of the more important Spanish cities, behind Madrid and Barcelona and this was underlined in 2008 when it hosted Expo 2008, a World’s fair on water and sustainable development that was very well received.

In terms of sporting attractions Zaragoza is represented by Real Zaragoza in football, who play in the Primera Division of Spanish football and have won silverware regularly throughout their history. Elsewhere the local basketball team, CAI Zaragoza, plays in the ACB League, at the Principe Felipe. Tickets are usually available for both teams’ home games so it’s an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.
