The York city is situated near the Ouse and Foss river, is a district of North Yorkshire, N England. The city is popularly known for manufacture of cocoa, confectionaries and other industries like light industries, instrument making and printing. But tourism is the main industry to boost the economy. The city being the junction of three riding of Yorkshire it is a rail centre.
History : the city’s history dates back to 120 when the Emperor Hadrian visited the city and built an earthen rampart built to protect it from Picts and the Celts. In 306 Constantius I became the Emperor of York and died here, also Emperor Septimus Severus 211 died here. St.Paulinus was the first archbishop of York in the 7 th century and city’s archbishop was the most holy and important person second only to Canterbury. The city as Eboracum was important military post in the British province of Roman Empire. The province was a British settlement occupied by ancient Brigantes.
York was famous education centre in whole of Europe during the 8 th century. A local Alcuin became the headmaster in one of the oldest public school of St.Peter’s school in England. The York Minster or the Cathedral of St. Peter is located on the site of the wooden church. In the 6 th century King Edwin was baptized by St.Paulinus on easter day at the York Minster.
