Warsaw

Warsaw the largest city located in the Mazowieckie province in east central Poland and spans the Wisla (Vistula River), with beautiful tourist destinations on the other side. The Royal Route, which stretches north south from the New and Old Towns is the main tourist center. The city was badly destroyed and left most of the population dead in the 2 nd World War.

Warsaw Attractions

Zamek Krolewski (Royal Castle) – the castle located on the plateau overlooking the Vistula River was destroyed in the war and was reconstructed in 1971. The castle actually built for the DUKes of Mazovia and the castle was expanded for King Zygmunt III Vasa, when he named Warsaw as the capital.

Wilanow Palace – the King Jan III Sobieski commissioned Augustyn Locci to build the Baroque palace and garden of Wilanow in the 16 th century.

Pawiak Prison – the prison originally built in the 1830 at the order of the ruling Czars and incarcerated many victims of the Nazi reign from 1939-44. The largest prison in Poland and symbolizes the oppression that has haunted over the last two centuries.

Narodowe Museum – the National museum’s art collections dates from the ancient times to the present day. The collection includes Jan Matejko’s monumental Battle of Grunwalkd (the Polish victory over the Teutonic Knights in 1410) and Egyptian art.

Katedra sw. Jana (St. John’s Cathedral) – the oldest St. John church in Warsaw was completed in the 15 th century and upgraded from a parish church to a cathedral in 1798.

Getto Zydowskie – the city had the second largest Jewish population and after Nazi invasion more than 400,000 Jews were rounded up and forced to stay in the Jewish Getto.

Lazienki Park – the park contains the Chopin Monument, where the annual festival is held each summer and the Orangerie with 18 th century gardens.

Palac Kultury (Palace of Culture and Science) – the tallest and the largest building in Poland and is reminder of Stalin’s ambition, which was a to the city. The viewing platform on the 30 th floor gives a splendid view of Warsaw.

Frederic Chopin – the monument situated in Park Lazienki is dedicated to Chopin, who spent the early part of his 20 years in Warsaw. Chopin’s parlour, the former home at the Palac Czapski Kransinski, where Chopin’s heart is interred in a pillar at the church of the Holy Cross next door.
