Vigo
The city of Vigo is located in the region of Galicia, in north-west Spain. It’s situated very close to the northern border with Portugal and has a population of around 300,000 people. Vigo’s roots go back to the Middle Ages, when it was still a small village. It was first recorded as being a village in the 15th century when records began.
During the 16th and 17th centuries the city was attacked due to it’s coastal location. In the 1580s Francis Drake raided the city twice, whilst a few decades later a Turkish fleet attempted to invade the city, but failed. This resulted in the building of high walls surrounding the city, in 1656, some of which can still be seen today.
In 1719 the Capture of Vigo occurred, when a British expedition landed and seized Vigo, occupying it for ten days before withdrawing. It had the consequences of making the Spanish high command realise how vulnerable they were to naval attacks. Vigo grew in the 19th and 20th century thanks to the city’s port, which was a major point in the local economy. The port is still going strong today and is the largest fishing port in Europe, this has led to the European Fisheries Agency placing their headquarters near the port.
In Vigo you will find a number of museums to visit, such as the Vigo Museum of Contemporary Art, which is one of the most important museums in Spain. Elsewhere there’s also the Museum of the Sea, which showcases Vigo’s naval history. In terms of sporting attractions Vigo is represented by Celta Vigo, who play in the Segunda Division of Spanish football. Due to its coastal location Vigo also boasts a number of sailing clubs, such as Real Club Nautico de Vigo, who offer a good environment for the practice of competitive sailing.
