The city of Versailles is a wealthy surburb of Paris, located in the Ile-de-France region of the country. It was the de facto capital of the Kingdom of France for over a century in the 17th and 18th century but was overtaken by Paris itself, which is approximately 10 miles to the east of Versailles. It remains as an important administrative and judicial centre in French life.
The city’s glory days were from 1682 when King Louis XIV moved his court and government permanently to Versailles. This meant that until his death in 1715 Versailles was the unofficial capital of the kingdom. This resumed after a brief period when Louis XV also made the city his main residence. However, by the late 19th century emphasis had shifted back to Paris and in 1879 the newly-elected government moved back to Paris for good.
In the 18th century Versailles was seen as a modern European city and it was used as a model when Washington D.C was created by Pierre Charles L’Enfant. Versailles has also staged some important events in modern history. In 1919 the Palace of Versailles was host to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, which signalled the end of war between Germany and the Allied Powers after 5 years in a state of war.
The main attraction in Versailles is the Palace of Versailles, which has been the residence for a number of French monarchs like Louis XIV.
