Venezuela is a country located on the northern coast of South America. It borders Colombia, Guyana and Brazil and includes many islands in the Caribbean Sea. Its capital and largest city is Caracas and the official language is Spanish. Founded in 1522, the country has a population of just over 30 million, making it the 40th most populous country in the world. The country’s official currency is the Venezuelan Bolivar Fuerte, which was introduced in 2008, replacing the original Bolivar and the country drives on the right side of the road.

The country was originally colonised by Spain in 1522, making it the first South American Spanish settlement. Venezuela finally achieved independence in 1811, when leader Francisco de Miranda declared it. However, this started the Venezuelan War of Independence and the battle for sovereignty was only won in 1821 under the leadership of Simon Bolivar.

One of the biggest cultural attractions in Venezuela is sport, with baseball being the biggest and most popular sport in the country. The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League was established following the Second World War, thanks to the influence of American oil companies and continues to be strong. Behind baseball is football, which has grown in popularity in recent years. Despite this the Venezuelan national team is still one of the worst in South America.

The climate in Venezuela varies depending on what part of the country you’re located in. There is a distinct rainy season, which occurs from May to November and this is known as winter, whilst the rest of the year is seen as summer. The temperature is dependant on elevation; if you are below 800 metres then temperatures are hot, around 27C on average, if you are between 800 and 2,000 metres then it’s even hotter, ranging from 30C to 45C, however in the higher mountainous regions, more than 2,000 metres up it is much cooler, with temperatures lower than 15C during the year.
