Valladolid
Valladolid is a city in northern Spain and is the capital of the province of Valladolid. Its history dates back 1072, when it was originally founded. In the 12th and 13th century it rapidly grew from a small town to a large city, thanks to the commercial boom provided by kings Alfonso VIII and Alfonso X.
The old city was damaged by the economic boom that enveloped Vallidolid in the 1960s, however some of the original architecture can still be seen, including some wonderful monuments. The main attraction in Valladolid is the Plaza Mayor, the main square. It was originally destroyed in 1561 but was reconstructed by royal architect, Francisco de Salamanca, who with it was credited with giving birth to the modern town square that’s seen in many towns and cities across Spain. It was the inspiration for Madrid’s very own Plaza Mayor and is surrounded by narrow streets and hosts markets nearly every day.
Other popular attractions include the unfinished Cathedral of Valladolid, which dates back to the 17th century and today contains a large archive of classical music. Valladolid also hosts the annual Valladolid International Film Festival, which has been held every year since 1956 and is one of the oldest in the world.
In terms of sport Valladolid is represented in the Segunda Division, the 2nd level of Spanish football by Real Valladolid, who are known as Pucela by the locals. The city is represented by CR El Salvador in rugby union, who are champions of Spain’s Division de Honor de Rugby and compete internationally, playing their home games at Estadio Pepe Rojo, in the centre of the city.
