The United Arab Emirates is actually a union of seven sovereign sheikhdoms situated in the south east Arabian Peninsula in southeast Asia. The UAE occupy a triangle of land and sea on Arabia’s eastern flank. Due to its location the UAE has been able to establish a link between Europe and the Indian subcontinent, the far East and Africa for a long time. The country’s valuable oil resources have given it an extremely high standard of living and it is the third largest producer of oil in the Gulf after Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
Abu Dhabi is the country’s capital as well as the name of its largest, richest, and most politically important emirate. The oasis city of Al-Ain, or Alain is found with the Abu Dhabi emirate and is considered a popular tourist attraction for its Fun City which includes a zoo, amusement park, several parks and heritage villages. If Abu Dhabi is the UAE’s most serious city the Dubai is its most fun, brimming with sand, sun and world famous duty free shopping. Ras al-Khaimah, the UAE’s northernmost emirate also claims some of its most beautiful scenery, the region has abundant greenery that is surrounded by a cool sea, flat desert, and rugged mountains. The old town includes a museum, souq and fishing port, and some of the best camel racing in the country.
Shopping in the city is much of luxury goods and are cheaper than in most countries, the Dubai duty free shop is one of the cheapest in the world. SoUKs sell traditional Emirate leather goods, gold, brass and silverware. Food specialties of Arab cuisine include hummus, tabbouleh, ghuzi, warak enab. In the Emirates makbous and seafood with spicy rice are also popular, local fruit and vegetables are increasingly available and there is excellent local fish. Nightlife is fabulous, there are several nightclubs located in major centers and entertainment ranges from Arabic singers and dancers to international pop stars. Bars are found in all top hotels and range from sophisticated cocktail lounges to English style pubs.
