Spain Driving Tips

So you've arrived in Spain and decided to hire a car to get around. You've done some research and your license is valid. Using Anycarhire.com you've found the agency which offers you the best value for your needs. Once you obtain a vehicle through car hire in Spain, you begin your journey. But before you go too far, there are some things about driving in Spain you need to know.

First and foremost is that Spain has a zero tolerance policy for driving under the influence and if you are from an EU country, the penalties will carry over into your home country. Fines are stiff and collected on the spot. If you are stopped and a breathalyzer test shows you have only .25mg/l of alcohol you will be prohibited from driving away from the scene. You should also be aware of the speed laws as these are also being strictly enforced. Generally the limit on major roadways is 120km/h and 50km/h in most cities. Seat belts must also be worn by all persons in the car, both front and rear. And always make sure you are carrying your required documentation (license, passport, etc.)

If you rent a car in Spain you are also required to have the following in the vehicle at all times. So check your rental before leaving the pick-up location. Here are the items you will need to have:

• A couple of triangles to use in case of breakdown that are CE approved;
• A reflective vest, kept in the passenger space, that must be worn prior to exiting the vehicle on any roadway where the limit set for speeding exceeds 50km/h;
• Spare set of lamps or bulbs and the tools to replace them;
• If you wear glasses to drive, you must have a spare pair.

You should also be aware that you need to use your indicator lights when turning or changing lanes. This too is being enforced by the local and national police. Another rule to keep in mind is that when approaching a roundabout, traffic to the left in the roundabout has the right of way. Also be aware of mopeds and motorcycles. They are all over the roads and weave in and out a lot. Be cautious when approaching a stoplight as red light jumping is common. Don't brake too hard or you could get hit in the rear. In general drive more defensively than you may otherwise at home. It always pays to take precautions and stay safe to enjoy your holiday.
