About Sicily
The island of Sicily off the tip of Italy is one of the largest and most developed Mediterranean islands. Steeped in history, and with a truly unique culture, it has become a hugely popular tourist destination that attracts visitors from all over Europe to the various coastal towns and historic cities that make Sicily such a great place to enjoy a holiday somewhere away from the more famous seaside resorts elsewhere in Europe.
If you are travelling to Sicily, car hire is absolutely essential if you want to enjoy your stay as much as possible. Having car hire in Sicily will enable you to explore the city at your own pace and avoid the need to use public transport which is limited on the island, or taxis that are expensive.
There are a number of entry points into Sicily. Messina is the point closest to the Italian Coast, and is a short hop from Reggio de Calabria on a boat. Many of the other ferries to the island enter the larger port of Catania, which has a number of attractions including the cathedral and a museum that includes a collection of information about the island’s ties to the mafia.
Catania is one of Sicily’s two main airports, the other being Palermo. Both airports are modern and are well connected to the main road that runs around the coast of the island and links most of the major towns and cities together. You can book car hire at either of the major airports and then pick up your vehicle on arrival.
Sicily has numerous different beach resorts including Marsala and Gela, where there are a choice of family friendly hotels, and the island also boasts some beautiful national parks including the protected area on the flanks of the giant volcano Mount Etna, which dominates the landscape of the whole island. The volcano is one of the most active in Europe, and if you are lucky enough to be on the island during a small eruption, it can be quite spectacular.
