San Sebastian or officially Donostia-San Sebastian is a small picturesque coastal city in the Basque region of Spain and it has one of the best in-city beaches in all of Europe. Located on the coastline of the Bay of Biscay, only 20 kilometres from the French border, the city can be accessed by train from France or Portugal or from the bigger cities of Spain. The two famous beaches of San Sebastian, La Concha to the west and La Zurriola to the east of the old town (or the Parte Vieja) sit astride the River Urumea and they practically define the city. From here you can sunbathe or swim in full view of the city’s landmarks, including the famous Miramar Palace, once the summer residence of the Queen, the city’s cathedral and the Maria Cristina Hotel among others. But for the really breathtaking view of the city you will want to climb Mount Igueldo on the western tip of La Concha bay and take in the panoramic view.
The city’s sights are however best appreciated when you travel around the coastline by car.
