San Sebastian is the cultural capital of the Spanish Basque Country is also called Donostia situated on the Cantabrian Coast some 20 kilometers away from the French border. It lies against the Bay of Biscay surrounded by green mountains, it is a tasteful resort without the normal holiday resort trimmings and makes an ideal base from which to explore the Basque Country. San Sebastian has a French feel to it in the design of the streets and buildings of the city’s Romantic district.

San Sebastian is an ideal destination for the tourist to visit a part of Spain that is very different from the rest of the country. Enjoyment here is friendly and the intimate way of life in this provicial capital offers the wealth of cultural activities normally associtated with the larger Spanish cities. San Sebastian is well endowed with interesting monuments, museums and parks. Among the monuments the most famous is the Miramar Palace the former summer residence of the Queen, the Cathedral built in the neogothic style and the Victoria Eugenia Theatre and the Maria Cristina Hotel. The Sierra de Aralar a mountain range of great ecological value where monuments from the Bronze Age and roads built by the Romans about 2000 years ago is a place which is worth visiting.

The beaches of San Sabestian, Concha which is the most famous one is fantastic for the tourist, the Ondarreta and Zurriola also called the Gros and the Concha and Ondarreta are into the bay adormed with Santa Clara Island is also a famous place to visit. The visit to the city is incomplete without a visit to the old quarter where most of the traditional local life takes place. The Basilica of Santa Maria del Coro patron saint of the city is on the only street that remains from the 1813 fire the Calle 31 de Agosto. The latter plaza is tucked away in one of the oldest corners or txokos of the city which contains not only a small ball court but a special area used for the ever popular stone dragging compettions.

The city offers the visitors a selection of museums one of such is the Museo de San Telmo and the views from Monte Lgueldo. Throughout the area there are hundreds of bars, small inns and restaurants stretching along the narrow and winding streets and by night there are the excellent restaurants including many specialising in sea foods and those with the stamina the bar scene. The city is quite small and your stay will be accessible to the city center.
