San Antonio the eighth largest city in the United States has retained its sense of history and tradition while carefully blending in cosmopolitan progress. The native Americans first lived along the San Antonio river calling the area Yanaguana which means refreshing water of clear waters, a band of Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon the river in 1691 and because it was the feast day of St Anthony they named the river as San Antonio. The city has always been a cross roads and a meeting place, sounds and flavours of Native Americans, Old Mexico, Germans, the Wild West, African-Americans and the Deep South mingle and merge.

San Antonio’s River Walk near downtown San Antonio offers much to the tourist in beauty and interesting things to enjoy. Tourists seem fascinated with boating at the River Walk. One of the world famous attraction is the Alamo which is only a short walk from the River Walk in San Antonio, it is one of the most visited historical sites in the United States located in the heart of the down town and today the Alamo is a shrine and museum. Some of the other attraction in the city are the Natural Bridge Caverns, located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country just north of San Antonio and southwest of New Braunfels, one of the world’s premiere show caves, designated by the department of the interior as a Registered US natural landmark and recognised by the Texas Historical Commision as a Texas Historical site; the La Villita located on the east bank of the San Antonio River, La Villita was developed in the mid 19 th century as a settlement adjacent to Mission San Antnio de Valero and the San Fernando Cathedral whose construction was started in 1731 by the Canary Islanders. Among the parks the San Antonio Mission National Historical Park and the Jose Antonio Navarro State Historical Park are the famous parks in the city and the Market Square is the largest Mexican market place outside of Mexico.

San Antonio also provides the perfect picture setting for great family vacations and a great time for the kids. San Antonio Children’s Museum is famous for kids where the kids are ecnouraged to explore a miniature version of the city. Some of the other famous places to visit are the Plaza Theatre of Wax which houses more than 225 life like characters in four themed sections, the Brackenridge Park a 433 acre refuge in the heart of the city offers a full day of family fun, the San Antonio Zoo which has a collection of more than 3000 animals ranked as one of the best in the country and the Witte Museum exhibits Texas history and science.

Among the other museum San Antonio Museum of Art is one of the best of its kind in the city which is a castle like buliding housing a collection ranging from ancient are to Mexican folk art. The last but not the least of the attraction is the Tower of the America which is 750 ft tall and offers a panoramic view of San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Plenty of shopping is also available at San Antonio’s River Walk which is a large indoor shopping mall at the River Walk.
