Salerno

Salerno is the provincial capital of Campania in south west Italy. It is a coastal city with a well-established port operation. It is also well known for Schola Medica Salernitana, the world's first university of medicine. It was also the site of part of the Invasion of Italy campaign during World War II. It has a long history and offers a variety of cultural attractions. The city dates back to the 9th century BC. During the 10th and 11th centuries AD, Salerno became known as a great center of learning much the way Alexandria was in the ancient world.

Today Salerno is in the geographical center of what is known as the Tourist Triangle of 3P (Pompeii, Paestum, and Positano). This brings a lot of tourism to the city, coupled with the city's own tourist attractions. These include such sites as Lungomare Trieste, Castello di Arechi, and the Salerno Cathedral which contains the crypt of Saint Mathew (one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus). There are also a number of other plazas, museums, and churches which offer historical and cultural insights.

In the Historic Downtown Salerno district you will find many shops and restaurants along with museums and other tourist sites. Along the waterfront area is the Lungomare Trieste which is one of the best promenades in Italy. It is patterned after the French Riveria. Much of the local culture is based around the University of Salerno. The university became public in 1968 and with that increased its enrollment. Approximately 40,000 students now attend its various colleges. Economically Salerno is driven by tourism and services though there is a small food production and pottery manufacturing base. Salerno also has a thriving port terminal which moves around 7 million tons of goods annually, much of which is containers.

Salerno's popularity and location make getting there simple. There is no local airport (nearest is in Naples approximately 50km to the north) but there is regular train and bus service. You can also get there by car due via several major roadways. Car hire in Salerno can be obtained by checking with anycarhire.com to get a cost comparison.
