
Salamanca
Salamanca is situated in the south west corner of Castile and Leon on the borders with Extremadura and Portugal. The city is large enough to be able to offer the advantages of a real city and at the same time it keeps the intimacy of a village. Industry in Salamanca assumes a high profile in the provincial capital of Salamanca and in smaller cities such as Bejar while the service sector plays an important role particularly in education and teaching.
Salamanca is however a real universtiy city Spanish students are everywhere and it is enormously popular with people all over the world who want to learn Spanish. Salamanca city hosts many festivals and the most famous of these is the sounding festival. Among the attractions the old and the new Cathedrals right next to each other, the older one is Romanesque started in the year 1140 and the new one is about 490 years old having been started in 1513 taking 200 years to complete. The university is the oldest in Spain and chock full of interesting architecture and arcades. The Casa de las Conchas the house of the conch shells is now the public library dating from the 15 th century it was considered one of the most representative constructions of the times of the Catholic King and the Queen. There are 15 museums in Salamanca exhibits ranging from art Deco to Fine arts to religion.
Food is fantastic and Roasts are popular, Cabrito and Cochinillo which is really delicious in Salamanca. It is very hard to find a restaurat in the city of Salamanca that doesn’t have a menu in English with pictures of the food and it is really a very bad sign.
