Romania Driving Tips

Romania is a country towards the centre of Eastern Europe situated on the Lower Danube bordered by the Black Sea. There are 21 million people in Romania and because of this the road network is very expansive and of good quality and maintained well. Romania is becoming anincreasingly popular tourist destination and as such, there are more and more foreigners are taking to Romania’s road network. Driving in Romania isn’t too different to most other countries, but a number of things should be remembers when doing so.

Driving around Romania is an excellent way to discover the immense natural beauty all around the landscapes of Romania. There is much to see off the beaten track and stopping almost anywhere can give you spectacular views of this natural beauty.

When driving in Romania, remember to drive on the right hand side of the road and overtake on the left. Seatbelts must be worn by law when you are outside town centres and your car’s headlights should be turned on regardless of the time of day or night. In Romania, as with almost anywhere in the world, drinking and driving is against the law.

Speed limits in Romania are quite lenient but should be obeyed at all times. When driving inside the cities and towns of the country, don’t drive more than50km/h and if on natural roads the speed limit is 90km/h. When you find yourself on European roads, you can increase your speed to a maximum of 100 km/h and on highways the speed limit is 140 km/h. If stopped by the police, you should comply with their requests, which are generally just to check your driver’s licence and car ownership or insurance details.

Outside of the cities and towns, the rural roads can tend to be bad quality and signage can be inferior and vague but the biggest thing to be careful of is the many horse drawn carts and horses that usually move quite slowly. As these types of carts don’t have any lighting it is important to be on the lookout for them because accidents happen quite frequently.

In general, when driving in Romania, drive carefully and defensively and try not to get angry at the locals who tend to drive a bit more flamboyantly and recklessly than other countries around the world.
