Qatar is a small peninsula in the Persian Gulf, Doha is the capital and the country is small but offers quite a few interesting things to the visitors. There is evidence of human habitation in Qatar as early as the 5 th or 6 th centuries B.C. The ancient geographer Ptolemy showed in his map of the Arab world a town believed to be the present Qatari town of Zubarah and the Danish, French and British expeditions have discovered inscriptions, rock carvings and fine pottery in the peninsula. Like all the countries of the Arabian Gulf, Qatar eventually came under Turkish rule and control for several centuries. Petroleum was discovered in commercial quantities in Qatar in 1939 and was first exported in 1949 and this has given Qatar a substantial income and a high standard of living.

The city of Qatar is rich in history and culture and offers a number of attractions for the tourist. Some of the main attractions in the city are the Sealine Beach Resort situated 55 km from the Capital offering a large variety of rooms, villas and chalets all with a sea view including sports and recreational activities and a number of restaurants, The Palm Tree Island has childrena and family amenities and a restaurant offering seafood and barbecue meals and a café serving snacks and refreshments, The Entertainment City which is the kingdom of Aladdin has more than 18 play features to suit all age groups including an artificial lagoon, a theater and a cafeteria, and the Zoo which lies 20 km from Doha on Salwa Road has a varied collection of animals, reptiles and birds as well as a mini amusement park for the children.

The city houses some famous parks also, to name a few of them- Al-Rumaila Park lying on Doha corniche has grass areas, chidren rides and a popular market and restaurant, The Dahl El-Hamam Public Park situated in Hhalifa Al-Shamalia containing several green lawns, passages for walking and playgrounds for children, and the Almaha Sanctuary established to protect the oryx, the species of endangered desert deer and Almaha is the national symbol of the state of Qatar.

Qatar city also houses some of the famous museums in the city. some of them are the Qatar National Museum displaying the geological history of Qatar as well as a collection of Islamic artifacts and relcs, The Al Khor Museum a two storey building, the ground floor displaying the anthropological life and the upper floor is set for the display of excavation discoveries in Al Khor area, The Al Wakrah Museum displaying the marine life and natural history materials, The Weaponry Museum displaying rare samples of swords, daggers and miscellaneous firearms and their accessories, and the Ethnographic Museum the building is the last remaining construction of its kind in the capital city of Doha situated in the Grand Hamad Street.

Shopping is fabulous in the city with traditional markets offering traditional handcrafted objects,the city center markets sell fabrics, clothes and small electrical goods, and mainly the Modern shopping centers they include the big Malls, these centers sell various of goods imported from America, Europe and East Asia and also offers recreational facilities including restaurants and cafes. Restaurants and cafes are in plenty in the city offering some delicious food and there are some western restaurants also in the city of Qatar that suit every taste and budget. Accommodation in in plenty ranging from five star hotels to clubs and many more fitting to all types of budget.
