Prague
Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic, located
in its own administrative region of the country. With a
population of around 1.3 million it’s also the largest city
in the country. The city was founded in the 9th century and
has a rich cultural heritage. The country drives on the
right and the most spoken language in the country is Czech,
whilst the currency is the Czech Koruna. The country’s time
zone is Central European Time, which is an hour ahead of
GMT.
Prague is incredibly popular as a tourist destination,
especially after the fall of the Berlin Wall in the late
1980s. During the Second World War it escaped most of the
bombing that occurred with Central European cities, so it
was able to hold onto it’s varied and historic architecture,
that comes in many forms. One of these is Prague Castle,
which is the largest castle in the world and dates back as
far as the 9th century.
Elsewhere the whole of the Old Town (Stare Mesto) is an
attraction in itself, with the main part, the Old Town
Square, hosting many great buildings, such as the Tyn Church
and the Astronomical Clock. Close by is the Charles Bridge,
which crosses the Vltava River and was built in the 14th
century. One of the most interesting sights in Prague is the
Strahov Stadium. Despite not being in regular use the
stadium is the second-largest in the world, holding 220,000
spectators, and is a relic from the communist era of the
Czech Republic.
The weather in Prague is very cold in the winter and quite
warm in the summer, with rain throughout the year. In the
long winters, which last from November to mid-March the
temperatures regularly drop below freezing, with January
being the coldest month. The weather starts to get warmer in
April, with the highest temperatures being seen in July,
with an average of around 18C.
