Portugal Driving Tips

Portugal has limited superhighways compared to the other countries, a four line highway- auto estrada runs about 360mi to 590km from Lisbon to Porto and the two lane highways connect the rest of the country.

The traffic travels on the right hand side and overtaking is on the left hand side. The speed limit in the city is 35mph to 56 kph, on open roads it is 55mph to 88kph and on the highways it is 75mph to 120kph. The minimum driving age is 17 years and non European licence must be accompained with an international driving licence. It is advisable to carry your driving licence, insurance certificates and vehicle registration papers along with your passport while driving in Portugal.

Seat belts are compulsory in Portugal in both the front and the rear and childrens under twelve years of age must travel in the rear seat. Parking is prohibited within 18 meters of a road junction, and 15 meters of a bus stop. Blue zone parking exists in many Portugal towns and you can obtain a cardboard disc free of charge from either the police or local motor club offices. Consumption of alcohol while driving is a crime and if found you will be heavily penalised.

A Portugal car hire which will take you through different locations will surely give you the idea that the quality of the Portugal's roads vary considerably! In spite of that the drivers, be they driving a private vehicle or a Portugal vehicle hired from the Portugal car rental, they are bound to have one hell of a journey. If you are unfortunate enough to experience a breakdown then a warning triangle is supposed to be placed almost hundred feet behind the vehicle.
