Furnas is one of the most attractive places in Europe especially its famous spa resort. The island is situated at the east of Sao Miguel Island. The name of the island came from its caverns that were formed by an eruption of its volcano in the 17th Century. By the 19th Century, Furnas Island became a famous health centre as well as tourism due to its 22 natural special mineral waters.
Furnas is active with its volcanic activity, which mainly can be found at the site of caldeiras where tourists can view the extremely high temperature bubbling springs and the steaming geysers that offers the mineral water and therapeutic mud that useful for the spa treatments. Pero Botelho is the nosiest and largest among the hot springs and its name is named after the devil. Parque Terra Nostra is located at the western part of the Lake Furnas. This charming park has been established and active for more than 200 years with its theme of English Garden. In addition, Parque Terra Nostra covered more than 30 acres and features several of unique plants, a fine three star hotel, and a swimming pool. Furnas could open up its beauty to you – all you have to do is hire a car for the optimum travel for the tourists.
Not far away from the Furnas, Povoacao, the old fashioned fishing village was the earliest settlement at Sao Miguel and it can be reached by mountain path that ascends up in bends before passing through the valleys, gorges and forest. On the other hand, heading 10 kilometers to the east, the Miradouro da Madrugada is an amazing cliff top resting spot which offers many beautiful views especially in the morning.
