Evident found so far has revealed the history of Porto since the Roman era. Though some Celtic and Proto-Celtic remains have been found in the city there has not been much documentation on this era. The reputation of this city as a business center started to flourish during Roman period.

Around the 6th and 7th century the city remained under the Moorish rule. According to wikipedia-

In 868, Vímara Peres, a Christian warlord from Gallaecia and a vassal of the King of Asturias, Léon and Galicia, Alfonso III, was sent to reconquer and secure from the Moors the area from the Minho River to the Douro River, including the city of Portus Cale, later Porto and Gaia, from were the name and political entity of Portugal emerged. In 868, Count Vímara Peres established the First County of Portugal.

With the marriage of João I and Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt in 1387 the ever lasting military alliance with England was established. Some century later ruler of Porto revolted the English thus giving rise to a civil war in 1822. The unrest thus created prevailed for few decades till 1892 when Portugal Republic was declared.

Today the city has importance both as a business hub and a center for world heritage.
