Porto Disabled Visitors
In Porto, much effort has been put in by the authorities behind improving facilities for disabled visitors, but the region is not particularly well-known for this.
Lifts and ramps have been added to almost all buildings in Porto, and they have become increasingly common features in buildings all over Portugal. Day by day, more and more hotels are integrating rooms specially adapted for disabled people into their repertoire.
All public transport which travel on the urban routes feature four seats reserved for disabled people, but unfortunately, no special access is provided for wheelchair-users.
Blind people may travel with their dogs if they are leashed and wearing muzzles. Their dogs can travel with them at no extra cost.
A number of rent-a-car companies have automatic and specially optimized vehicles available for hire by disabled people.
At the airport, disabled passengers are made to board planes before children and all other passengers. At the door of the aircraft, the disabled person is transferred into a narrower aisle-seat which is easier for attendants to reach. This excellent policy is maintained by all Portuguese airlines, unless the passenger checks in or boards late.
