Pittsburgh is an American city in the state of Pennsylvania. Located in the west of the state it’s the 22nd largest city in the United States, with a population of more than 300,000. The city is known for it steel industry, however in recent years the local economy has moved away from steel production and largely focused on services and healthcare. Because of its historic steel production the city is still known as ‘The Steel City’.

Founded in 1758 by John Forbes the city grew massively after the American Civil War, when iron and armaments were of high demand. Steel production began in 1875 and by the start of the 20th century the U.S Steel Corporation was formed and Pittsburgh was producing nearly a half of the country’s steel.

There are many sights to see in Pittsburgh, including the Andy Warhol Museum and the Carnegie Museum of Art. If you’re not artistic then you can still find plenty to do with the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, which houses extensive dinosaur collections, and the Pittsburgh Zoo.

These are the Pirates (baseball), the Steelers (American football) and the Penguins (ice hockey). The most successful of this trio are the Steelers, who have won the Superbowl six times since the start of the 1970s.

The weather in Pittsburgh is very contrasting, with hot and humid summers and cold and snowy winters. In the summers there are occasional heat waves and the hottest month is July. At this point in the year temperatures regularly hit 31C and higher. In contrast during the winter the temperature is regularly below freezing, with January and February being the coldest months. During this time around 24 inches of snow is likely to fall.
