
Perpignan
Perpignan the capital of Rousillon is located in the lower Languedoc region 12 kms from the mediterranean coast. It is a progressive city that is simultanrously briming with historical architecture. It has a strong Catalan identity which dates back to the 13 th and the 14 th century when it was the capital of the kingdom of Mallorca.
One of the most famous attractions is the Castellet building, this can be climbed and offers superb views over the city. The Palias des Rois de Majorque the vast 13 th century castle of the kings of Majorca has a distinctly Moorish feeling to it and is an elegant and well preserved castle. The Loge de Mer which is right in the heart of the town is famous for the decorations with sumptuous wooden carved ceilings and sculpted window frames. Other famous places to visit are the Cathedrale St Jean made from pebbles and red brick and the museum The Musee Casa Piral featuring some educational exhibits on Catalonian Folklore and rural Catalonia. The museum of modern art in the town center has some of the finest collections of art in the southwestern France including a large number of Picasso mastepieces and works by Chagall, Braque and Matisse.
There are plenty of cafes and restaurants and bars as well as daily market at the Place Cassanyes serving delicious foods and the North African shops would make your shopping a memorable one. The city’s superb cuisine is also a great place and it is filled with both classic French and traditional Catalan restaurnats.
