Attractions of Paphos
Paphos has so many attractions that it’s seen by many as an open museum of sorts. The whole town is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List and the city is renowned amongst ancient historians, eager to explore the mythical locations within the city. As well as the historical element Paphos also offers a fantastic range of dining options and shopping experiences.
At the harbour you will find the Paphos Castle, which dates back to the Byzantine empire and was used to protect the harbour in the 13th century. You can see attractions such as the Houses of Dionysos and it’s amazing mosaics, the Tomb of the Kings and other vaults and coves that are steeped in ancient history. Elsewhere you can visit the Byzantine Museum and the remains of the ancient city walls and the building dedicated to the Asclepius, the Greek God of Medicine.
A few miles from the city centre a popular tourist attraction is the Rock of Aphrodite, which emerges from the sea, as Aphrodite herself did according to Greek mythology. Close by is the Aphrodite Hills resort that offers tennis courts for hire, as well as an 18-hole championship standard golf course. This resort has won worldwide praise so is definitely a place to visit in Paphos.
To the north-east of Paphos is Ayios Neophytos Monastery, which is famous for it’s Enclosure that was carved out of the mountain by a hermit, in the Byzantine era. Nearby you can visit the painted village church of Emba, which is a sight you won’t want to miss.
