
About Paphos
Paphos the west coastal town located in the lee of the Western Troodos Mountains focuses around an attractive harbour. The town has a new international airport and opened up the area, which has an air of holiday charm combined with history.
Paphos has numerous sites with connection to Greek mythology and the legendary birth of Afrodite, whose fame bought worshippers there to follow the cult of the Goddess. The towns name is linked to the Goddess, the mythological daughter of Venus and Pygmalion.
Paphos became the capital of Cyprus under the successors of Alexander the Great and continued as the islands first city for more than seven centuries. It retained its importance under Roman rule and the most famous governor Sergius Paulus, was converted to Christianity by St. Paul in 45 AD.
Paphos Attractions
Paphos District Archaeological Museum includes collections of Cypriot antiquities from the Paphos area dating back from the Neolithic Age to 1700AD.
Ethnographical Museum includes private collections and objects from the Neolithic Age to the present day.
Tombs of the Kings the area containing underground tombs carved out of solid rock dates back to the 4 th century BC.
Ayia Solomoni Church a Christian catacomb, a sacred tree stands on the top, which cures diseases according to tradition.
The Mosaics of Paphos the house of Dionysos, house of Theseus and recently excavated house of Aion is located near the harbour.
Paphos Odeon a 2 nd century Odeon built of well Hewn limestone blocks, which was discovered by the Cyprus Department of Antiquities in 1973-74.
Saranta Kolones the castle was built in the first years during the rule of the Lusignans in the 12 th century on the site of a previous Byzantine Castle.
Paphos Castle built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbour but the Lusignans rebuilt the fort in the 13 th century, again dismantled by the Venetians in 1570.
Panayia Limeniotissa Basilica dating back to the early Christian period of the 5 th century and dedicated to Our lady of the Harbour, which was completely destroyed during the Arab raids in the 7 th century.
Theoskepasti Church means Veiled by God according to tradition, god sent down fog to protect the original church during the Arab raids.
