Palma History

Palma is a city of Spain. It’s a major city on the islands of Mallorca and also a port. Palma is the capital of the Balearic Islands community in Spain. The population of Palma is about 900,500. Palma is the 12the largest city of Spain. Half of the population of Mallorca live is Palma. Its airport Son Sant Joan, each year carries almost 22million passengers.

Palma was at first founded as a Roman camp. Then the city was conquered by the Byzantine. Then the city was colonized by the Moors. Finally James I of Aragon established the city. There’s not much evidence of the Roman and Muslim conquest in the city. But the Byzantine period in the city is quite well of. Especially the mosaics of the Cathadral in the medieval time indicate the presence of Byzantine time in the city of Palma.

From the time of 902 and 1229 the city was under the rule of Muslim domination. The Moors came to Palma during the 8th century. At this time of the history the population was based on the economy of self sufficiency and piracy. There was a peace treaty in condition of the fractional power of the city. Palma was a city which was an enclave between the Christian and the Islamic territories. This encouraged and increased the possibilities of piracy in the waterways.
