Palermo History
Palermo is the capital of the Province of Palermo which is a region of Sicily. Palermo is the principal city and the administrative sector of the region of Sicily. People of Palermo are called Palermitani or Panormiti.
In the 8th century BC Palermo was discovered by Phoenicians on the north-western coast of Sicily. Palermo was not a Greek city-state. But it was later a part of the Greek speaking Roman Empire.
Palermo is the most conquered city of the world. Palermo was a Phoenician city before the First Punic War which took place in 264-241 BC. After that Sicily was under the rule of Roman and Palermo fell under Syracuse. Palermo became the provincial administration of Syracuse. As the Roman Empire divider the Eastern Byzantine Empire became the ruler of Sicily and Palermo.
In 9th century Sicily was divided in two parts and the two parts declared war against each other. Euphimius became the winner being the ruler of the winning side and started dreaming of ruling the Roman Empire. For the purpose he took help of the Arabs. The Arabs came in Palermo in 827 to help Euphimius. But he died. Then the Arab ruler moved the capital of Sicily to Palermo and since then Palermo is the capital of Sicily.
