Oxford
Oxford is a city in the South East of England, located 78
miles from the capital, London. It’s the county town of the
county of Oxfordshire and attained city status in 1542. Its
famous for its University, Oxford University, which is the
oldest university in the English-speaking world.
During the English Civil War it gained infamy for housing
Charles I in 1642, once the King had been expelled from London
by the Parliamentarians. The city later gave way to the
Parliamentarians in the Siege of Oxford in 1646. Later in the
century it hosted the court of Charles II during the Great
Plague of London in 1665 and in 1681 it hosted a sitting of
Parliament, named the Oxford Parliament.
Oxford has seen rapid economic growth in the last century,
thanks to it’s proximity to London, which has meant that it’s
less than an hour away by train. This has led to an influx of
‘London overspill’ commuters. As well as a well connected
railway station Oxford also has its own airport, the nearly
London Oxford Airport, situated in Kidlington.
Oxford is home to two universities; the University of Oxford,
the aforementioned oldest in the world, and Oxford Brookes
University, which is of lesser status. These two institutions
bring in hundreds of students a year to the city and have
helped the city grow in the last few decades.
Oxford has its own football team, Oxford United FC. They play
in League Two of the English football system and play their
home matches at the Kassam Stadium, which is next the
Blackbird Leys estate on the outskirts of Oxford.
