City of Orleans is located in north of central France. It is the capital of Loiret Department, on the Loire River. This place is the transportation and commercial hub of the region. Large manufactures that include; processed foods, chemicals, textiles, and machinery are stationed in Orleans. Tourism is a vital factor to the city's economy. The Sainte-Croix Cathedral that was destroyed by the Huguenots (French Protestants) in 1567 and rebuilt by Henry IV and his successors is a popular tourist destination here. The University of Orleans is also located in the city.
The city of Orleans is located on the site of Genabum. Genabum was the Celtic town burned during the period of 52 BC by the Roman general Gaius Julius Caesar. Later it was rebuilt by the Roman emperor Lucius Domitius Aurelian. Aurelian named the city after him, Aurelianum. The modern name of the city was originally derived from it. During the period of the 6th and 7th centuries, it was the capital of a Frankish kingdom. But later it became a cherished residence for the kings of France. At the present time, the city of Orleans has become a popular tourist destination and a hot-spot to spend vacations.
