Introduction

Nottingham the regional capital and UK’s most fascinating city. It is also the center of creativity, from Lord Byron to Paul Smith and home to the famous outlaw, Robin Hood.

Historic Events

Goose Fair : the largest traveling fair of the country and recorded existed since 1284 in a charter from Edward I.

Medieval Farming : in England Laxton is described as ‘The Last Open-Field Village’ and is still farmed by a medieval system of agriculture. Farmers are allotted strip of land in the fields and ploughed by tractors, once done by oxen’s.

Jesse Boot : the founder of boots, an chemist born in 1850 in Hockley, the poorest part of Nottingham. In 1914 there were 560 boots branches all over the country.

Legends of Nottingham

DH Lawrence : was born in a small terraced house in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire in 1885, at present the house is a museum and well preserved. The DH Lawrence heritage runs a festival every year during the month of August for 18 days.

Robin Hood : the world famous outlaw tales have been told for 700 years and still continues. The medieval hooded figure in Lincoln Green, a master bowman with a swift mind, who dispossessed greedy Norman overlords. Robin Hood was forced to live in the royal hunting forest of Sherwood.

Lord Byron : the rebellious poet at the age of ten inherited his title and Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire. He spent much of his time reading and writing, also used the great hall and dining room to practice fencing and pistol shooting. Lord Byron lived at the abbey until 1814 and had to sell Newstead due to financial problems.

Attractions

Nottingham Castle : the 17 th century ducal mansion was built on the Castle rock, commissioned by the DUKe of Newcastle. In 1067 a wooden castle was built by William the Conqueror and was later rebuilt by Henry II in stone as the main royal fortress. It was opened as the first municipal museum and art gallery outside London in 1878.

The Museum of Nottingham Life : is housed in a group of restored 17 th century cottages nestled in the rock beneath Nottingham Castle. The castle presents everyday domestic and working life of the past 300 years.

Newark Castle : the castle built in 1133 by Alexander is certainly the most important landmark in the town. In 1547 King Henry VIII took it for the crown from the Bishops of Lincoln.

Wollaton Hall and Park : the hall was built in 1588, a grade one listed building and one of the finest Elizabethan houses in England. The grade two-listed Camellia house, which is set within the grounds of the Wollaton Hall, both were remodeled by Sir Jeffrey Wyatt in 1822. The historic deer park is a habitat of species with heard of red and fallow deer roaming the wild.
