Nimes is a city located in the Gard department of the
Languedoc-Roussilon region of southern France. The city is the
capital of the department and has a population of over
150,000. The language spoken in Nimes is French and the

Nimes is steeped in Roman history and you can still see many
remains from their time as rulers of Nimes. The biggest and
most striking of these is the amphitheatre, which is the best
preserved Roman arena in the whole country. Built in the 1st
or 2nd century AD it’s still used today for bull fighting and
for concert performances.
Other than this you can also find the Maison Carree, which is
a small Roman temple dedicated to the sons of Agrippa. This
was built in 19 BC and is again one of the best preserved
Roman temples in the whole world. Also nearby is the Pont du
Gard, a aqueduct that was used to carry water across the
valleys.
The city also boasts a couple of sporting attractions; with
Ligue 2 football team Nimes Olympique representing the city.
In rugby union the local team is RC Nimes, who play in the
Federale 1 national competition.
