Newcastle
Newcastle Upon Tyne is the largest city in the North East of England, and dominates both the culture and the economy of the region. Newcastle is a major port town on the banks of the Tyne, and is connected to neighbouring Gateshead via a number of bridges including the iconic Tyne Bridge which was the pattern for the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia.
Newcastle itself is synonymous with its football team. Newcastle United is a way of life in the city, and St James' Park is the cathedral. The Toon are the topic for discussion whenever people talk.
Newcastle's Bigg Market is known around the world for the fact that it has a bar for every day of the year, and the night life is one of the reasons why so many people travel to Newcastle each year. The warm welcome that you get from the locals, coupled with the number of hotels available in the centre of the city have made Newcastle a popular choice for many stag and hen nights.
If you book car hire in Newcastle, and leave the city behind to tour Northumbria at your own pace, there is plenty to see and do. The town of Durham is located north of Newcastle, and boasts a medieval cathedral and abbey, as well as pleasant countryside. Also nearby is Alnwick Castle, which is one of the most impressive in England due to its huge size. It was famously used in the TV series Blackadder, and has also appeared in many movies.
Closer in to Newcastle are the seaside towns of South Shields and Whitley Bay which are either side of the mouth of the Tyne and offer completely different experiences from each other, although both are great fun during the summer months.
If you would like to visit the holy island of Lindisfarne, you can do so by driving north along the coast from Newcastle towards Berwick. The island is accessible via a tidal causeway that can be walked across twice a day. It is a fascinating place to visit for a day and includes a ruined priory as well as the modern monastery along with a nature reserve.
