New-york History

New York was occupied by 5000 Native Americans during 1524 when it was discovered by Giovanni da Verrazzano. It was called New Amsterdam then. In 1626, Dutch General Peter Minuit bought the Manhattan Island from the Lenape. The English occupied the city in 1664 and named it "New York" after the Duke of York. After the 2nd Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch took control of Run in the East Indies in return for the New Amsterdam.

The city appeared as the stage of a sequence of prime wars recognized as the New York movement during the American radical battle, and was taken by the English for more than seven years. The Continental Parliament assembled in NYC and the first United States President, George Washington, was appointed in 1789. The city was the capital until 1790.

During the 19th century, a progress scheme termed as the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 that grew the city street network to cover the whole Manhattan, and the opening of the Erie Canal, which linked the Atlantic seaport to the huge farming marketplaces of the North American interior. New York City had exceeded Philadelphia as the biggest city of US by 1835.
