New Orleans offers many culinary delights to gourmands. It has good-quality food for people on any type of budget.
Seafood is fresh and relatively cheaper in New Orleans. Oysters are very popular here. Softshell crab can also be delicious. Crawfish is a highly popular delicacy here, usually boiled in a large pot of spicy water and served with corn and potatoes. They can also be eaten with pasta or in sushi.
Poor boys or po-boys are New Orleans’s variation of the sandwich, which is served on a po-boy loaf which similar to French bread. The sandwiches can contain roast beef with gravy, fried shrimp, oysters etc. dressed with lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and at times, pickles. Every neighborhood in New Orleans has a number of favorite po-boy places. The better ones slaughter, cook, and season their own sandwich meats. The po-boys embody the taste of New Orleans at very reasonable prices.
Muffaletta sandwiches, gumbo stew, and red beans and rice are other popular dishes of New Orleans. Snowballs or “sno-balls”, the New Orleans version of the “snow cone”, are excellent as dessert, along with Beignets pastries and café au lait coffee, which consists of half brewed coffee and half hot milk.
