People in Netherland

To the west of Europe, Netherlands is a densely populated country which was formerly known as Holland.”Netherlands” literally refers to “low lands” or in fact “low countries”. Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy.

People of Netherlands are known as “Dutch’ although you will find Turks, Indonesians, Moroccans, Antilleans and Surinamese also in minorities. According to a survey conducted in July 2006, the population of the country is 16,491,461.

While walking through the cities in the western part of Netherlands surely you will come to realize that the Dutch are truly cosmopolitan. You may ask why? I can simply tell you that people in the north part of the country appear to be blond, blue-eyed as well as taciturn. While the southern people appear to be darker in complexion, smaller and a little bit talkative.

Three big rivers in fact divided the country into two major parts. People of the northern part tend to be Protestant while southern part tends to be Catholic although this prejudice has been faded away. A survey in 2002 apprises Catholics are 31%, Dutch reformed are 13%, and Calvinists are 7%, Muslims 5.5%, others 2.5% and non-believers are 41% of the total population. There are two official languages are prevalent here: Dutch and Frisian. People living here have also a good command over English, German and French as well.

The soil of Netherlands has given birth to the legends like Vincent van Gogh, Piet Mondriaan, Willem de Kooning, Christiaan Huygens, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, Harry Mulisch, Jan Wolkers, Simon Vestdijk, Cees Nooteboom etc. In fact, Netherlands is a country of artists, philosophers, astrologers, writers.
