Exploring Murcia
Murcia is a lovely place to visit, with many wonderful sites worth exploring.
By travelling about 30 kilometers along the motorway to Andalucia to Alhama de Murcia, directions to Sierraespuña can be found. It is home to some beautiful pine forests, ideal for taking idyllic strolls through.
The Paredes de Leiba is a big wall of stone nearly 500 meters long and 60 – 80 meters tall. It is full of routes ideal for climbing, and suitable for climbers of all skill levels. New routes are opened every year.
The towns of Caravaca and Cehegin are also highly recommended to tourists for visiting. The Iglesia de Mary Magdalena, a medieval church in Cehegin, offers refreshing views. The Castle of Saint Cruz in Caravaca is a grand castle, containing a cross blessed with mystical healing powers. Public transportation do not travel to these places, so taxis or rented cars are required.
Murcia also has a large number of museums. The great sculptor Salzillo’s museum is the most famous one among them. Salzillo was responsible for the creation of most of the pasos used in the Easter Holy Week (Semana Santa). The polychromed sculpted wooden bodies of angels, virgins and biblical personalities made by him are magnificent. His magnum opus is probably the Belen de Salzillo, an excellent reproduction of the story of Jesus’s birth consisting of a series of small sculptures. This museum is located at C/San Andres, at the Plaza de San Agustin.
