Located 17 miles south of Murcia , Spain- the Murcia San Javier's airport is a military base and civilian airport. It is operated by Aena ( Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea , or Spanish Airports and Aereal Navigation ), the Spanish airport authority.
The airport has the capacity to receive aircrafts up to the sizes of Boeing 757 and 767. The airport was also declared fire category 5 by IATA. Among the many facilities of the airport, it has an ambulance of its own. The town of Murcia is popular for charter groups, so the airport has to handle quite a number of charter flights.
Due to arrival of low cost flights in the last few years, this airport has become very busy. According to Aena, passenger numbers have jumped from just 88,608 in 1995 to a staggering 848,037 in 2004. In 2006, 1,645,886 passengers used the airport.

Though the airport is situated on the Costa Calida, travelers heading towards the southern tip of Costa Blanca can also avail the airport especially for going to particularly resort towns such as Torrevieja.
