
About Montpellier
Montpellier is a lively city that has been a center of learning for over 800 years, and it is famous for its Medical School founded in the 13 th century. Montpellier’s history started late compared to many towns in this region, it grew as an important commercial center and due to its importance Montpellier was heavily fortified and surrounded by huge ramparts. It became a major trading zone for spices, sugar and silk and made huge amounts of money from its unique red dye Cochenille made from a parasitic insect found on the oaks growing in this region.
Places of interest and main attraction is the old town which is the heart of the city center packed with interesting little shops. Though it is a students town, it is lively multi cultured and attractive. Among the museums the best are the Musee Fabre displaying superb collection of paintings by the likes of Dufy, Desnoyer, Delaunay and Courbet, Musee faugau traces the history of the Languedoc and folklore and the Musee Lauguedocien exhibiting Romanesque and prehistoric artifects. The famous national park Le Mercantour is the most visited place by the tourist. Number of restaurants and cafes is in the old town and it is a great place to stroll as much of the place is a pedestrian zone.
