About Mijas
Mijas is a town located in the province of Malaga, in the autonomous region of Andalusia, Spain. It’s in the heart of the Costa del Sol region and is a golfer’s paradise, hosting more than half a dozens golf courses and the biggest golfing resort in Spain, the La Cala Resort. The town lies near the southern tip of Spain, on the Mediterranean coast and is only 450 metres above sea level.The town is popular with tourists, especially the aforementioned golfers. Due to its proximity to the sea the climate is mild throughout the year, lending itself to sports like golf and tennis, which is catered for in nearby Marbella, which holds an international women’s tennis tournament every year.
The town was founded in prehistoric times when it was known as Tamisa by the Roman Empire, who later changed the name to Mixa and then to what it’s currently known as. At the time of the emirate of Cordoba the town was conquered by Umar ibn Hafsun. This state of affairs continued under the rule of Bobastro until they were defeated a few decades later. During the siege of Malaga Mijas resisted attacks by Catholics; before surrendering later on as the town was ransacked.
The main attractions in the town are; Mijas Pueblo, which is the hillside village, Mijas Costa, which is the main commercial area and La Cala de Mijas, which is a small golfing resort by the sea. There are currently seven golf courses available to play in and around the town, with four more being constructed. The town relies on golfs for much of its tourism.
