Messina
The city of Messina is a plesant town located with the best harbour on the Strait of Messina between the Tyrrhenian and lonia Seas in the northeast Sicily. Messina was always on the leading edge of change and always more cosmopolitan relative to the rest of Sicily. The people of Messina also established the cities of Mylae and Himera. The town proper is situated on the slopes of Mount Peloritani which forms an amphitheater reaching the sea. Messina has a dark side it is located on an earthquake prone belt stretching from Vesuvius through Stomboli then through Mount Etna.
The earthquake of December 28 1908 began with a 35 second major shock and followed by a month with Messina in the center and causing 60,000 fatalities. The major streets went around the circumference of the amphitheater running straight down to the harbour quay. What one see now is the modern town of Messina built on top of the ancient site.
