MAURITIUS TRAVEL GUIDE

Mauritius located in southern Africa, island in the Indian Ocean and east of Madagascar is a small coastal plain rising to discontinuous mountains encircling central plateau. The main island from, which the country derives its name is of volcanic origin and is almost surrounded by coral reefs.

Chamarel Coloured Earths – located in the district of Black River near a small village in the southeast known as Chamarel is the coloured dunes of volcanic ash. The colours are naturally displayed in an orderly pattern are a fascinating phenomenon.

La Vanille Crocodile Farm – the crocodile farm is situated in the south of the island in the heart of an unspoilt forest and includes crocodile imported from Madagascar are bred here. The farm also includes a small zoo with animals found in the wild of Mauritius.

Ile Aux Cerfs – is an island located in front of Mauritius in the west has clear waters and long beaches fringed by filao trees. The island is a paradise for lovers of sea, sand and sun, which is accessible by boat.

Grand Bassin – the Grand Basin is a natural lake resting in the crater of an extinct volcano, which is pilgrimage place for lot of Hindu’s living in Mauritius.

National History Museum – known as the Mauritius Institute that was founded in 1880 and set in the Jardin de la Compagnie in Port Louis. The museum houses the famous Dodo and many stuffed animals representing the fauna of Mauritius. The museum also has a library with collections of over 50,000 books and a special section for researchers of the Mascarene archipelago.

Trou Aux Cerfs – the extinct crater in Curepipe is 85 meters deep and more than 2000 meters wide. The place provides panoramic view of the western part of the island.

Waterfalls – one of the biggest falls of the Riviere du Cap and has way to go down in the basin, which is built by the waterfall. Other waterfalls are the Rochester Falls near soullic in the south formed by strange columns of contracted lava and the Chamarel falls.
