
About Manchester
Manchester is still the most densly populated area of England despite heavy migration for 20 years. It is a metropolitan district north west of England situated on the Irwell, Medlock, Irk and Tib rivers. Manchester is known since the 14 th century for textile industry and as the textile city of England. The city includes other major industries like chemicals, pharmaceutical and research industries with a centre for printing and publishing in Northan England. Ringway is Manchesters airport.
During the early settlement era it is believed Celtic settlement existed and the Romans called Manchester as Mancunium. The remains of the Celtic settlement still exists.
Being one of the oldest places Manchester was granted first charter in 13 th century but representation in parliament was only 1832. With the efforts of Richard Cobden, Manchester was incorporated as a borough.
The heart or centere of Manchester is St.Peter’s square and the closely constructured buildings focusses towards the square. The G-Mex exhibition was a former central station south of St.Peter’s square. The Bridgewater hall, opposite chinatown and Gay village, Halle orchestra’s home are on the east. To the north east is the Piccadilly Gardens which accessess to the Northern Quarter.
