Malta History

Malta or Republic of Malta is a beautiful Mediterranean country in the Southern Europe. The country is also called an island nation consisting of an archipelago of seven islands; three of these islands are inhabited.

In history Malta holds a conspicuous position due its existence in the Mediterranean Sea. The country has been conquered by numbers of civilizations since the ancient times. The island is pretty popular for its connection with the Knights of St. John a ruler of the land. This phenomenon along with the legendary Biblical shipwrecking of St. Paul on Malta initiated the Roman Catholic trend. This is still the official religion in modern Malta.

The rich past of the land has kept a fascinating impact on its current culture. Malta is the home to the oldest free standing structures in the world dating back to 3500 BC. Hagar Qim and Imnajdra temples at the southern end of the country confess its rich past even in 2500 BC. The land was ruled by Phoenicians during 700 BC and the Romans came to the land around 218 BC.

Malta became a part of Britain in 1814 as part of the Treaty of Paris. Malta played an important role during World War II, owing to its proximity to Axis shipping lanes. On September 21, 1964 Malta became an independent nation.
