
Mahon History
Mahon is one of the largest amongst the natural harbors in the world. It is the major reason behind its being the capital of Menorca since the time when British has moved it in 1721 from Ciutadella. It has a harbor that is about 5 kilo meters long and even over 1 kilo meter in the its widest point. The depth is about 15 to 30 meters. Being situated in the Mediterranean, has earned itself a strong place through out the dates of history.
There are many buildings in Mahon with the mark of history upon them. The oldest amongst them is the Arch de San Roque. It is the remains of the wall that once encircled Mahon. Alaior- the old road passed through its gateway. The Town Hall was built in 1631 and then restored in the 1780. it has a clock with historical background. This clock was given to the people of Menorca from Richard Kane, the English Governor.
The Church of Santa Maria is also an ancient building and it has a famous organ with around 3000 pipes. The Plaza de la Conquesta has a great monument in the memory of King Alfonso III. He conquered the island in 1287 from the Moslems.
The town’s market is really a convent, which was built in 1751.
