The history of Luton dates back to the 6 th century when a Saxon outpost was built on the river Lea. Then there were nearly 800 habitants in the town, the economy was mainly dependant on agriculture. At that period the town was called Loitone.
The famous church of St. Mary which is one of the main attractions of the town was built by Robert, 1 st Earl of Glouscester, in 1121. During middle ages, Luton had six watermills, the name of Mill Street near the town hall was derived from this phenomena.
The town was destroyed by the great fire in 1336, but it was soon rebuilt. By the end of the 16 th century, there was a Brickmill in the town and the totally agro-based economy started to change. The hat making industry started to flourish in the 17 th century and within 18 th century the town became exceptionally famous for making hats, especially straw-hats.
The town grew strongly in the later years of 19 th century. The population increased and the railway stations were built. The famous Vauxhall cars were founded in 1905 and they ruled the motor industry for years.
Today, the town has access to all the modern technologies and there are plans to be implemented for further advancements.
