About Luton
Although Luton is probably best known for its place as one of the major manufacturing towns in the UK, and the home of the white van, it is actually a town that offers a lot more than you might expect, and is an increasingly popular place for visitors. In most cases, people who are arriving into Luton are doing so in order to make their way to London. Luton is less than an hour from the centre of London by road, and this means that many of the fantastic attractions of the capital are accessible if you book car hire at Luton Airport for when you arrive. The proximity of London to Luton means that you can spend a full day in the city and see the main sights such as The Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Trafalgar Square, The National Gallery, and even see a show at one of the theatres in the West End.
Also within easy reach of Luton is the famous town of St Albans, which is a historic market town that has a long history and numerous interesting buildings including a stunning abbey that gives the town its name.
Within half an hour of Luton you can visit either of the UK's premier university towns of Oxford and Cambridge. During the summer months you will find that both Oxford and Cambridge are very attractive cities that beg to be explored. Aside from the famous university buildings, you will find that the rivers – the Isis and the Cam – are both beautiful places to spend a day.
Luton itself has a number of interesting sights to see during your visit. The Town hall is a modernist industrial style building that was built to celebrate the town's motor industry importance. St Mary's Church in the centre of the town is one of the most notable buildings, and is more than 850 years old. The church boasts a number of small chapels including the Wenlock Chapel, which is named for one of the local families.
Until recently, the church was bordered by a power station, although this has now been demolished and is to be replaced by a modern shopping area.
